Gillam Wins Quadruple -Crown, While Furlong A Double Winner at 2017 Royal LePage Amateur Provincial Championships

 

Salmonier, NL....Golf NL Hall of Famer Judy Gillam is an icon in ladies golf in this province. At the provincial championships this past week she again proved unstoppable as she captured all four divisional titles for an unprecedented second time.

Gillam, a member of Humber Valley Resort recorded a three day total of 254 to capture the Amateur, Mid-Amateur, and Senior titles. Gillam carded an 87 in the final round to secure the titles by 3 strokes over Janet Mills of Bally Haly Country Club who recorded an 88 for a three day total of 257. Gale Roberts, also from Bally Haly Country Club rounded out the top three in the divisions with a three day total of 270.

Gillam, completed her quadruple win with a 33 stroke win over Linda Webber of Bally Haly Country Club who recorded a three day total of 287. Bobbie Boland of Pitcher's Pond Golf Course remained in third place throughout the competition and recorded a total score of 298.

Mike Furlong of Bally Haly Country Club carded a 74 in the final round to lead wire to wire and capture both the Men's Amateur and Mid-Amateur Divisions. Nathan Peters, George Chaulk and Nikashantess Penashue tied for second in the Amateur Division with a three day total of 228 and competed in a tie-breaker to decide the Willingdon Cup team. At the conclusion of the tie-breaker Peters took second with a birdie on the first playoff hole while Penashue took third recording a par.

In the Mid-Amateur Division, while Furlong captured the title and George Chaulk claimed second place, Jaron Flynn and Chuck Conley of Bally Haly Country Club tied for third position with an identical three day total of 229 to create another tie-breaker to determine the third person on the provincial team. Flynn pared the first playoff hole to claim third place and the right to represent the province at the Mid-Amateur national championship.

In the Senior Men's Division, George Chaulk of Harmon Seaside Links captured his first Senior title with a 1 stroke victory over defending champion, Chuck Conley,. Eddie Bearns of Bally Haly Country Club took third place with a round of 77 for a three day total of 232.

Don Boland of Bally Haly Country Club captured his second consecutive Super Senior Division title with a 7 stroke win over fellow club member Colin Budgell. Budgell moved from fifth to second on the final day with a round of 82 and a three day total of 245 moving him ahead of third place Johnnie Williams of Clovelly who carded a 91 for a three day total of 253.

During the awards ceremonies, Darrell Denief of The Wilds Golf Resort was presented with a small token of appreciation for hosting the champions and acknowledged for coordinating the volunteers to assist with pace of play, forecaddies, scoring and starting.

It was also announced that Royal LePage will continue their title sponsorship of the championships and that the 2018 Royal LePage Provincial Amateur Championships will be held at Bally Haly Country Club in St. John's from July 8th to 11th.
